Fiorentina’s Fabio Grosso first head coach sacking in Europe’s top leagues of 2026-27

Fabio Grosso became the first head coach in Europe’s top five leagues to be sacked this season after he was dismissed by Fiorentina.

Grosso, 48, was sacked just three games into the 2026-27 Serie A season — and just four games into his Fiorentina tenure — with his side bottom of the table with zero points.

The former Italy international was appointed in June on a two-year contract through to 2028, and oversaw league defeats to Roma (4-0), newly-promoted Frosinone (3-0) and Torino (2-1). His single victory came against second tier Benevento Calcio in the Coppa Italia.

“ACF Fiorentina announces that Fabio Grosso has been relieved of his duties as coach of the men’s first team as of today,” a club statement read.

His replacement is yet to be appointed

Gross is the first head coach across the top flights in England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France to be sacked in 2026-27.

The 2006 World Cup winner’s final game in charge was Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Torino, with his side leading 1-0 shortly after half time through Matteo Pellegrino, before Rolando Mandragora equalised in the 74th minute and Che Adams scored the winner eight minutes from time.

Fiorentina are one of three sides on zero points three games into the Serie A season, alongside Genoa and Venezia. They face the latter in Venice on Friday.

Grosso succeeded Paolo Vanoli as Fiorentina’s head coach, who led the club to 15th the previous season.

He took the job following a two-year spell with Sassuolo, who he led to promotion from Serie B and steered to 11th in Serie A last term.
